The second-ranked Murray State rifle team returned to action after winter break in convincing fashion Saturday with a tri-match win against No. 8 Nebraska and No. 16 Ole Miss at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford, Mississippi. The Racers shot a 4687, besting the 4672 shot by Nebraska and the 4593 shot by the host Rebels.
Murray State finished the day with a 2319 in smallbore, followed by a 2368 in air rifle. The 2368 in air rifle marks the third time this season that the Racers have shot the school-record score.
"I thought the team returned ready to go to work, after a pretty good week of preparation." said head coach Alan Lollar. "I felt there were some good things happening in our first week back."
Ivan Roe led Murray State in the match with a 581 in smallbore and a career-high tying 595 in air rifle to lead all shooters in the match with an 1176. Alathea Sellars also had a big day for MSU with a career-high 583 in smallbore and a 590 in air rifle for a career-high 1173 aggregate score.
MacKenzie Martin was just one off Roe's score with an 1175, made up of a 583 in smallbore and a 592 in air rifle. Tessa Howald followed with a 579 and 590 for an 1169, while Barbara Schläpfer shot a 576 and a 591 for a total of 1167. Ben Estes uses a 570 in smallbore and a 590 in air rifle to finish with an 1160, while Robert Broadstreet rounded out MSU's day with a 569 and a 586 for an overall score of 1155.
"Kenzie, Tessa and Ivan were very solid for us today and Barbara had a nice day in air rifle. Bobby Broadstreet also had a nice day on both guns and is really showing improvement," said Lollar. "I was very pleased with Alathea and the way she broke through with a 583 smallbore, something we have seen coming for a while. She followed that performance up with another good day on the air rifle day. She has really been working hard and it is beginning to pay off."
The Racers will return to action next Saturday when they host the 2016 Withrow Invitational at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range. Â
