The second-ranked Murray State rifle team beat No. 9 Memphis and matched No. 3 Kentucky in its final match of the regular-season Saturday at the Rifle Range at Barker Hall in Lexington, Kentucky. While the Racers beat Memphis, which shot a 4644, handily, they fell to Kentucky on the center shot tiebreaker despite shooting an identical score of 4693. Despite the loss, MSU showed it can still compete even without leading scorer Ivan Roe, who is still away competing in Europe.
"I am proud of the way we have maintained the season average while Ivan was away," said head coach Alan Lollar. "It really shows the commitment and work the team has put in to make it about the team and not about the individual."
Kentucky bested Murray State, 2336-2331, in smallbore, but the Racers battled back to take the air rifle portion of the match, 2362-2357. However, the Wildcats were able to claim the win by tallying 308 center shots, compared to 289 by Murray State.
Senior Tessa Howald led the Racers with a career-high aggregate score of 1177 and tied her career-best in air rifle with a 594. In addition, she was just three off her personal best and two off her season-high in smallbore with a 583.
Freshman Barbara Schläpfer followed Howald with an 1174, after scoring a 581 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle. Sophomore Ben Estes also had solid day for Murray State with a 586 smallbore score and a 587 air rifle score to finish at 1173.
Freshman MacKenzie Martin shot a 581 and 585 to end the day at 1166, while fellow freshman Alathea Sellars turned in an 1165 with a 577 and a 588. Senior Ryan Limpus shot a 561 in smallbore, but bounced back in air rifle with a 592 for an 1153 aggregate. Sophomore Robert Broadstreet rounded out Murray State's day with a 571 and a 585 to finish at 1156.

"Tessa, Ben and Barbara led the way today with very consistent matches. Kenzie was also solid at 581 in smallbore and Alathea was good at 588 air rifle. Bobby is continuing to gain confidence and consistency, while Ryan had a nice air rifle at 592," added Lollar. "Now we need a good week of training to get ready for the OVC Championship at home where we are looking forward to a good atmosphere and a good weekend."
The Racers return home next weekend to host the 2016 OVC Rifle Championships at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range. Smallbore will be shot Saturday, followed by air rifle on Sunday with relays at 9:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Saturday and 9:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
