Young Racers Make Progress At Wright State Event
10/2/2016 11:55:00 AM | Women's Tennis
The Murray State women's tennis team scored a pair of consolation doubles wins and a consolation title over the weekend at the Wright State Raider Invitational, held at the South Regency Tennis & Fitness Center in Miamisburg, Ohio.
Â
Racer coach Jorge Caetano continues to see progress from his young team that has only one senior and six underclassmen on the 2016-17 roster.
Â
"It was another great weekend of tennis for us," he said. "We keep getting better as a team, match after match and the girls' confidence keeps getting higher and higher."
Â
The Racers' doubles tandem of Claire Chang and Alina Schibol lost a close match to the team from Bowling Green 7-6, but came back to claim consolation bracket wins over Akron (6-4) and IUPUI (6-0). Murray State's team of Amina Hadzic and Sara Bjork lost 6-3 in their opening match of the second double flight to Wright State, but came back to claim wins over Bowling Green (6-4) and Akron 7-6.
Â
In singles play, Chang and Hadzik each won matches before being eliminated and Alina Schibol won the consolation bracket of the second flight with a 6-2,4-6,10-4 win over Alisa Reshetnikova of Northwestern Ohio.
Â
"Our doubles are looking much better and both our teams went 2-1, so I am very pleased with that," Coach Caetano said. "Claire ended up losing a tight match 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker in the semis to the eventual champion, but I'm very happy with her performance again. Amina and Alina also played some very good tennis and went 2-1 for the weekend, both playing on a very competitive #2 flight. Both girls saved set or match points in their wins which shows how tough these twos were this weekend."
Â
"Huge congrats to Alina for being mentally tough and playing really smart on key moments of her matches in order to win the #2 flight back draw. Amina played some amazing tennis this weekend and her last match was just incredible. That might have been one of her best individual performances as a Racer so I am very proud of her."
Â
The Racers now take some time to gear up for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (Oct, 20-24) at Middle Tennessee State.
