The Murray State Racers take to the road for the first time in the 2016-17 season when they travel to the Murphy Center to take on the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. The 6:30 p.m. tip in Murfreesboro, Tennessee marks the fourth-straight season the two have met.
All Racer games are aired live on free radio on WFGE 103.7FM with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley, in his 26th season and former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth calling the action. Each team started the season with home wins on Friday. The Racers erased a seven-point deficit (62-55) with 3:23 left to get a 73-70 win when Jonathan Stark hit a 3-point basket with 1.5 seconds left. Stark scored 12 of his 19 points in the final 2:40 of the game and Terrell Miller scored 23 points to lead MSU to the win. MTSU defeated Milligan College 102-64. JaCorey Williams and Reggie Upshaw each scored 21 points to lead MTSU.
Terrell Miller's 23-point debut (5-of-10 from 3-point range) was MSU's best debut (vs a NCAA D-I opponent) since Antoine Whelchel scored 27 points at home against Gardner-Webb in 2000.
The Racers and Middle Tennessee were Ohio Valley Conference rivals from 1952 until the Blue Raiders left in 2000 for the Sunbelt Conference, then MTSU joined Conference USA in 2013. MSU leads the all-time series 103-34 and has won two of the three meetings as they've played in three straight seasons. The Racers won in their last visit to the Murphy Center in 2014 by a score of 68-49. Since 1996, the Racers have won four of their seven games including the last two.
As the 16th head coach of the Racers, Matt McMahon enters his second season as Murray State plays their 92nd season of collegiate basketball and soon, their 69th in the OVC. The Racers are looking for their 30th straight winning season. Entering the 2016-17 season, their 29 straight seasons is tied for the fourth best streak in the nation.
When Ohio Valley Conference media day was held in Nashville (Oct. 22), the Racers were voted the favorite in the West Division and senior guard Bryce Jones was named to the OVC Preseason Team. Once the Racers get to league play in 2017, they'll be trying to win their 25th regular season title and when the OVC Tournament rolls around in March, the Racers will try for their 16th title, which would send them to the NCAA's for a matching 16th time.
The Racers' tough pre-conference schedule continues Saturday when they travel Bowling Green State where they'll play the host team as well as Green Bay and UMKC in the Bill Frack Tournament.
