Racers Rally to Claim OVC Tournament Crown

Just like they have done all season long, the Murray State volleyball team persevered on Saturday night to rally for a five-set victory over SIU Edwardsville to win the 2016 OVC Tournament and clinch the OVC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Set scores went 25-16, 24-26, 22-25, 25-13 and 15-11.
The win improves the Racers' (23-8) record to an incredible 7-1 this season in five-set matches, including all three victories this season over the Cougars (22-8). In six of their five-set victories this season, the Racers were able to rally from a 2-1 deficit in the match. The Racers now advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons and the third time in program history.
Scottie Ingram, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, led the way with a match-high 21 kills. Ingram also became the all-time leader in career kills in program history on Saturday night, passing Sarah Dearworth. Ingram now has 1,574 for her career. Ingram also tallied her second consecutive double-double on the night with an incredible 20-dig performance. Kristen Besselsen and Ellie Lorenz joined Ingram on the All-Tournament Team.
Besselsen also had a double-double as she had an all-around stellar performance, tallying 19 kills, 12 digs, six assists and a team-high four total blocks in the win. Kamille Jones added a career-high 16 kills on the night and Olivia Chatman recorded eight and a team-high .318 hitting percentage.
Hannah Stultz also had a career-night in the victory as she tied a career-high with 60 assists in the match and also had a career-best 20 digs. Lorenz added a match-high 28 digs from her libero position and Alex Kaufmann tallied 14 from the back row as well.
As a team, the Racers were out-blocked by SIUE 11-7 overall, but managed to have a better team hitting percentage (.199-.128) and had just two service errors to go along with two aces, both by Stultz. The Cougars meanwhile, had three aces and six serving errors.
MSU now waits to see where it will play next. The NCAA Selection Show will be held Nov. 27 at 8 p.m., and will be televised on ESPNU.
