Five members of the Murray State rifle team recently competed in USA Shooting's Annual Winter Airgun Championship in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Â As a group, MSU qualified for five of the six possible men's finals and five of the possible six women's finals.
"We had a really good three days," said head coach Alan Lollar. "It's a chance to work on match plans over a three day period. The shooters can become more consistent with what works. As a group we qualified shooters for all but two finals, 10 of 12, some with more than one shooter."
Ivan Roe led the way by qualifying for five of six finals with a second place finish in the open division on day one and a win in the open division on the third and final day. Alathea Sellars also qualified for five of six finals with her best finish of fourth place coming in the junior division on day one. She also finished seventh in the open division on both day one and day three.
"Ivan had a solid weekend and made all but one final," said Lollar. "He opted not to shoot the junior finals. He will age out and not be able to compete as a junior next year and did not want to take the place of a younger shooter. He shot in two finals finishing second on day one and winning on day three, he was very consistent. Alathea really showed up big, shooting in five of six possible finals. She is a solid air shooter that is gaining confidence every time out. The experience she got this weekend under pressure will help us next spring."
Robert Broadstreet won the junior division on day one, while Shelby Huber posted a personal best finish of 16th in the junior division on day one. Meike Drewell qualified for the junior finals on day two and had a personal best finish of 15th in the open division on the same day.
"Bobby did a fine job," Lollar said of Broadstreet. "He won his junior final on day one and has worked hard and has a chance to really contribute. Shelby has been training hard and it showed this weekend. He had three career days and his consistency is getting better all the time. I'm very happy with where he is at right now. Meike shot well. She has been training hard and working on some specific areas and it is really starting to show. She had a fine freshman fall and I'm looking forward to her spring."
Â
The Racers will return to action as a team on January 14 in Oxford, Mississippi in a tri-match against Ole Miss and Kentucky.
"We now focus on finishing the semester strong academically and getting some rest to prepare for the challenges coming this spring."
