Racers Take Aim At 11th OVC Title This Weekend

The second-ranked Murray State rifle team will return home this Saturday & Sunday to host the 2015 OVC Rifle Championship at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range. The Racers will look to hoist the OVC title for the 11th time this weekend and for the first time since 2011.
Murray State is in the midst of one of its most successful season's in program history. Having never eclipsed the 4690 total score mark as a team prior to this season, the Racers have now done so eight times in 2015-16, including two scores over 4700. MSU has also set new program-best marks in all three categories this season including a 2348 in smallbore, a 2368 in air rifle and a 4714 in total score.
After two weeks of competing in Europe, sophomore Ivan Roe returns this week, just in time for the OVC Championship. Roe leads the Racers in all three major scoring categories with a 583.3 in smallbore, a 591.6 in air rifle and an 1176.9 aggregate. His smallbore average is currently the second-highest in the nation and the third-highest in aggregate score.
Freshmen Barbara Schläpfer and MacKenzie Martin have been very impressive this season and follow Roe at 1176.9 and 1172.3 in aggregate average. Schläpfer is currently averaging 582.3 in smallbore and 590.4 in air rifle, while Martin is shooting a 581.2 in smallbore and a 589.3 in air rifle.
Sophomore Ben Estes currently averages a 581.1 in smallbore and a 588.0 in air rifle for an overall average of 1169.1. Rounding out the probable squaded shooters for this weekend are senior Tessa Howald at 1166.7 and freshman Alathea Sellars at 1161.5. Howald currently boasts a 577.8 average in smallbore a 588.9 average in air rifle, while Sellars stands at 573.3 in smallbore and 588.3 in air rifle.
This weekend's competition includes defending champion and 12th-ranked Jacksonville State, 18th-ranked Morehead State, the 20th-ranked UT Martin mixed team, as well as the Skyhawk's women's team.
Saturday's smallbore relays will take place at 9:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., while Sunday's air rifle relays will be at 9:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., with the awards ceremony to immediately follow.
