Racers Half-Way Home After OVC Smallbore Win

The second-ranked Murray State rifle team won the smallbore portion of the 2016 OVC Rifle Championship Saturday at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray. The Racers shot a 2342 in the event, easily besting second place Jacksonville State's 2325. Morehead State finished third at 2281, while the UT Martin mixed team and women's team rounded out the field at 2263 and 2237, respectively.
Freshman Barbara Schläpfer and sophomore Ivan Roe shot the day's highest score with a 587 and were followed by Ben Estes at 585. Tessa Howald was the final counter for Murray State Saturday at 583, while MacKenzie Martin rounded out the squaded shooters at 580.
Individually, Roe & Schläpfer tied for first at 587 in the event, while Jax State's Makenna Richardson came in third at 586 and was followed by Estes in fourth at 585. Tessa Howald rounded out the top five in fifth with a 583.
All five teams will return to the Spurgin Rifle Range Sunday for championship finale with the air rifle portion of the event. The relays are scheduled for 9:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., with the awards ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Racer Room in Stewart Stadium.
