Racers Down Ball State In Florida Opener
3/11/2016 4:08:00 PM | Softball
The Murray State softball team got its four-game Florida trip started right Friday with a 6-1 win over Ball State at the Pruitt Softball Complex in Jacksonville.
Ball State (10-13) started the game on a hot streak, reeling off three straight singles to open the contest. However, after the Cardinals scored their lone run of the game on an illegal pitch, junior Mason Robinson went on to retire the next three batters and limit the damage to one.
Defense would be central to the win for Murray State (7-8), as it stranded five base runners in the game, including three on third base. In the second inning, the offense came around for the Racers as they scored five runs on three hits and two Ball State errors. MSU would another run in the fourth, to cap the scoring at six.
Junior Mallory Young led the team on the day with two of MSU's seven hits, in addition to scoring once and driving in a run as well. Senior Shelbey Miller also put in a good day's work by going 1-for-3 with two runs, two stolen bases, a hit by pitch and a RBI.
Robinson went the full seven innings for Murray State in the circle, allowing just one run on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks to improve to 5-5 on the year.
The Racers will return to the Pruitt Softball Complex Saturday for two games. Murray State will take on Ball State in game one at 9 a.m. ET, followed by Jacksonville at 11:30 ET.
