The Murray State softball team lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday, 9-5, to Ball State and 4-2, to Jacksonville, at the Pruitt Softball Complex in Jacksonville Florida.
Murray State (7-10) surged to a 4-0 lead in the game, thanks in large part to a three-RBI double by junior Taylor Odom in the third inning. After allowing just one run in the fifth, it would all come crashing down for Murray State in the sixth. Four different Racer pitchers allowed six walks and gave up three hits for a total of eight runs, as the Cardinals took a 9-4 lead. The Racers added one run in the seventh on a RBI-single, but it was not enough as Ball State held on for the 9-5 win.
Junior Jocelynn Rodgers was 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI, while Odom finished at 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Freshman Amber Van Duyse took the loss for MSU after allowing two runs on two walks in 0.0 official innings. Sophomore Haven Campbell had a solid outing for the Racers in the start, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks with a career-high six strikeouts.
In the second game, Jacksonville jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs thanks a double steal that scored one and a sacrifice fly that scored another. However, Murray State tied it up in the third with a two-RBI single from Twaddle that went straight up the middle.
The Dolphins would go on to use a pair of RBI singles in the third and fourth to take the lead for good at 4-2. Murray State was not without its chances, as it outhit JU, 6-4, and stranded a total of eight runners on the base paths.
Six different Racers tallied hits in the game, as Twaddle finished with two RBIs and freshman Brenna Finck and senior Shelbey Miller scored one run each. Junior Mason Robinson took the seven inning loss by giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Murray State will close out its four-game road trip to Florida Sunday, when it takes on Jacksonville at 11:30 a.m. ET.
