The Murray State softball team took care of Jacksonville, 9-1, in five innings Sunday at the Pruitt Softball Complex in Jacksonville, Florida. The win sends the Racers home from their Florida road trip at 2-2.
Murray State wasted no time scoring in the contest, as senior Shelbey Miller scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Taylor Odom in the first. Miller expanded the lead in the second with a two-run home run, her first of the season.
The Racers (8-10) blew the game open in the third by scoring five runs, with four coming on a pair of two-RBI singles by Miller and junior Cayla Levins. Levins would add another run in the fifth on another single, to cap the scoring at nine. Jacksonville (14-13) scored one run in the fourth, but it was not enough to extend the game, as it ended via the eight-run rule after five complete innings.
Defense was once again key for Murray State as they twice loaded the bases with no outs and twice got out of the inning, throwing out four runners at the plate in the process. Miller finished the day at 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBIs and a walk, while Levins was also 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIS. Junior Jessica Twaddle also had two hits in the game, to go along with two runs scored.
Sophomore Haven Campbell got the win for MSU by allowing no runs on four hits over three innings of work. Senior J.J. Francis threw the final two innings of the game and allowed one run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.
On Wednesday, Murray State will play its 2016 home opener, a doubleheader against Evansville that is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Racer Field.
