3/17/2016 9:59:00 PM | Softball
The Murray State softball team earned a split with Evansville Thursday at Racer Field in Murray by winning their home opener 3-1, before falling to the Purple Aces, 5-4, in the night cap.
The Racers (9-11) unknotted the 0-0 tie in the fifth inning of the opener and it began with junior Taylor Odom earning a walk. Her pinch runner, freshman Leah Kesel, would be driven home in the next bat on a triple by junior Maggie Glass. Junior Mallory Young increased the lead to 2-0 in the next at-bat by driving in Glass on an RBI fielder's choice. Two batters later, Young scored a single by Madison Culver to cap the scoring at four.
Evansville (11-9) got on the board in the sixth on a homerun by Chandra Parr, but that would be as close as they could get, falling 3-1. In addition to Glass and Culver, freshman Brenna Finck was the only other Racer to tally a hit in the contest. Junior pitcher Mason Robinson went the distance for Murray State allowing just one run on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk to improve to 6-6 on the year.
In game two, the Purple Aces blew the game wide open in the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits and one MSU error. The Racers, however, answered in the bottom of the frame when Twaddle scored after junior Cayla Levins reached on an error.
In the fifth, Twaddle scored senior Shelbey Miller to cut the lead to 5-2, with a triple. Twaddle would score herself after junior Jocelynn Rodgers reached on an error in the next at bat, before Levins cut the lead to just one, at 5-4, on a single that scored Kesel. The Racers would go on to have a runner at third later in the fifth and then again in the sixth, but could not score and fell, 5-4.
Glass, Levins, Finck and Twaddle each had a team-high two hits in the game, with Twaddle and Levins also notching a RBI. Sophomore Haven Campbell took the loss for Murray State by allowing five runs, one of which was earned, on eight hits with one strikeout over 3.2 innings. Senior J.J. Francis was solid in relief for MSU, allowing no runs on just two hits with a walk and a strikeout in the final 3.1 innings.
On Saturday, Murray State will travel to Cape Girardeau to open OVC play with a three-game set against Southeast Missouri. Game time will be at 1 p.m., on both days, with a doubleheader being played Saturday.
