Racers Swept At SEMO

The Murray State softball team dropped a pair of games to Southeast Missouri to open OVC play, 4-3 and 9-1 in six innings, Saturday at the Southeast Softball Complex in Cape Girardeau.
In game one, Southeast Missouri (8-11, 2-0) did all their damage in the top of the second on three RBI-singles from Sarah Messex, Darby Pruett and Claire Wernig. In the third MSU took advantage of three SEMO miscues, as Shelbey Miller reached and scored on an error to cut the lead to 4-1. Later in the inning, the Racers scored again as Jessica Twaddle was caught stealing, but the rundown to catch her allowed Leah Kesel to cross the plate, despite the inning ending.
In the seventh, the Racers loaded up the bases on a single, an error and a walk when Twadlde drew her own walk to score Miller and pull the Racers within one, 4-3. However, that would be as close as they would get, as SEMO got the next out to end the game.
In addition to a hit by Twaddle, Maggie Glass and Jocelynn Rodgers also came up with hits in the contest. Mason Robinson took the loss for MSU, allowing four run on 10 hits with one walk and four strikeouts over a complete game.
In the second game, the Racers were first on the board in the second with a solo home run from Cayla Levins. However, in the third, the Redhawks took the lead on a two-run home run of their own from Haylee Crack and never looked back. SEMO would add one more run in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the second to end the game in six innings via the eight run rule.
Glass finished the game two by going 2-for-3, while Mallory Young, Twaddle and Miller also had hits. Haven Campbell got the loss after pitching 4.2 innings and giving up five runs on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Murray State will look to avoid the sweep Sunday when it returns to the Southeast Softball Complex for game three with the Redhawks at 1 p.m.
