The Murray State softball team belted out four extra-base hits, including a home run, to power past Memphis, 6-3, Tuesday at the Tiger Softball Complex in Memphis, Tennessee.
The game was a scoreless tie for three and a half innings, until Memphis (18-18) was able to load the bases with two outs using a single and two walks in the bottom of the fourth. Calli Irvin did the honors for the Tigers with a single that dropped into left center, allowing two runs to cross the plate and giving Memphis the lead.
In the top of the fifth, Brenna Finck got the inning off on the right foot for Murray State (12-17) with a triple. After Shelbey Miller walked in the next at bat, pinch hitter Madison Culver laid down a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to cut the lead to 2-1. Twaddle followed with a fielder's choice on a play where Leah Kesel would be out at second base, but Shelbey Miller tied the game thanks to a Tiger error. Murray State would go on take the lead in the next at bat on a home run from Jocelynn Rodgers to make it 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Irvin cut Murray State's lead to 4-3 on a double that scored one run, but was just inches from going out of the park. Despite the run, Murray State padded its lead in the seventh on a RBI-triple from Rodgers that scored Cayla Levins, who reached on a double, to make it 5-3.
The Racers then capped the scoring at six on a pinch-hit single from Julia Liceaga that scored Rodgers from third. In the bottom of the seventh, Mason Robinson closed out the win for the Racers by getting three Tigers to ground out to end the game.
Finck was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run and two walks in the game, while Rodgers was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Levins also made an impact by going 2-for-4 with a run, while Miller scored and drew two walks. Robinson went the distance in the circle to improve to 9-8 on the year, allowing just three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Murray State now returns home to play 16 of its next 20 games within the friendly confines of Racer Field. This weekend, the Racers will host Eastern Illinois in three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday and a single-game Sunday. First pitch on both days is scheduled for 1 p.m.
