Roe Closes In On Olympic Team Spot

Sophomore Ivan Roe of the Murray State rifle team continued his quest for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this past week by shooting in an ISSF World Cup Series event in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Manhattan, Montana native finished the 10m air rifle event with a 622.9, which was good enough for 16th place. Roe finished as the second American in the event, coming in just five spots behind three-time Olympian, Olympic gold medal winner and world-record holder Matthew Emmons.
"To finish 16th at a very competitive World Cup, is a very nice accomplishment," said head coach Alan Lollar. "We are really proud of him. He works hard and it's good to see it paying off."
The purpose of Roe's trip was to obtain a minimum qualifying score (MQS) in a Rio 2016 qualifying event in order to move on in the Olympic qualification process. With his MQS in tow, Roe will now advance to the 2016 USA Air Olympic Trails, June 3-5, at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio. The June trails are the last event in the Team USA qualification process and will determine the final air roster for Rio 2016.
Should Roe make the Olympic team, he would become the seventh Racer all-time to do so and the first since Morgan Hicks in 2004. He would also join William Beard and Roger Withrow from the 1984 Olympic team as the only male MSU rifle Olympians. Currently fellow native Montanan Pat Spurgin (now Pitney) is only Racer shooter to win an Olympic medal, taking home the gold in 1984.
