The Murray State softball team notched a pair of wins over Bryant Friday, 2-1 and 6-0, on the opening day of the 2016 Wilson/Marini Classic at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Alabama. The win in game one was the 100th career victory for head coach Kara Amundson in just her fourth season at the helm.
In game one, the Bulldogs (0-7) were first on the board in the third when Mollie Anderson reached and advanced to second on back-to-back errors by the Racers (6-5). Anderson was then driven in during the next at bat on a single up the middle by pitcher Elle Madsen to give her team the early advantage.
Murray State would get the run back in the fourth after junior Jessica Twaddle led off the inning with a single and was then moved to second on a sacrifice but from junior Jocelynn Rodgers. After another sacrifice bunt attempt in freshman Madison Culver's at-bat led to an error by Bryant, Twaddle saw her window and scored to tie the game at one.
In the fifth, junior Cayla Levins led off the inning with a double, then moved to third thanks to a wild pitch by Madsen during freshman Brenna Finck's at bat. Finck would then go on to reach on another error by the Bulldogs, allowing Levins to score the would-be game-winning run.
Junior Mason Robinson moved to 4-3 on the year in the circle with the win, after giving up just one unearned run on four hits and six strikeouts. Offensively, Twaddle led the way for MSU at 2-for-3 with a run, while Levins was 1-for-2 with a run.
In game two, it was all Racers as they produced double-digit hits for just the second time this season, outhitting the Bulldogs, 10-4, in the contest.
After Shelbey Miller walked to open the third, Maddy Feeney brought her home with a double, to make it 1-0. Sophomore Maggie Glass made it 3-0 in the sixth when she blasted her second home run of the season, scoring freshman Leah Kesel, who pinch ran for Culver after a single, in the process.
Â
In the seventh, Miller singled to begin the frame, followed by a single from Feeney. In the following at bat, Twaddle brought both batters home with MSU's first triple of the 2016 season. Two batters later, Twaddle and senior Brianne Sanders, who replaced Rodgers after she reached on a hit by pitch, completed a double steal to cap the scoring at 6-0.
Feeney led Murray State in the game by going 2-for-3 with a run, a RBI and a walk, while Miller was 1-for-3 with two runs. Pitching wise, Haven Campbell improved to 2-1, by allowing just four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in her first solo shutout of the season.
Murray State returns to action in the Wilson/DeMarini Classic Saturday with Indiana at 10 a.m., followed by third-ranked Auburn at 12:30 p.m.
