The Murray State softball team lost a pair of games Saturday on day two of the 2016 Wilson/Marini Classic at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Alabama. The Racers dropped the opener to Indiana, 5-1, and then fell in the finale to third-ranked Auburn, 10-0, in five innings.
In game one, Indiana's CaraMia Tsirigos broke up sophomore Haven Campbell's no-hit bid in the fourth with a single that scored Sarah Thompson after she reached on an error, advanced to second on a walk and moved to third on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. Taylor Uden extended the Hoosier's lead later in the inning on a single up the middle that brought home two to push the advantage to 3-0.
Rebecca Blitz added to the Indiana (10-7) lead in the fifth with a double that scored two to make it 5-0. Junior Jessica Twaddle got the seventh stated in the right direction for Murray State with a solo home run to make it 5-1, which was followed by a single from junior Jocelynn Rodgers. However, the Hoosiers would retire the next three batters, squashing the rally and preserving the 5-1 win.
Freshman Madison Culver joined Twaddle and Rodgers as the only Racers with hits in the game, while Campbell took the loss in the circle on a three run, three hit, two strikeout, four walk performance over 4.1 innings of work. Freshman Amber Van Duyse finished the game and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
In game two, the No. 3 Tigers (17-1) flexed the offensive muscle by scoring seven runs in the first inning and never looking back. Auburn would go on to add one more run in the third and two in the fourth to end the game, 10-0, after five via the eight-run rule.
Twaddle and senior Shelbey Miller each had a single in the game for Murray State (6-7), while freshman Brenna Finck had a double. Mason Robinson allowed seven runs, two earned, on three hits with three walks and a strikeout over 0.2 inning to take the loss in the circle for the Racers. Senior J.J. Francis tossed the last 3.1 innings of the contest for MSU and gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Murray State will get another shot at Indiana Sunday when they take on the Hoosiers at 9:45 a.m., in the Racers' Wilson/Demarini Classic finale.
