Racers Keep It Close In DH Loss To SIUE
4/16/2016 6:44:00 PM | Softball
Just three runs was the combined difference for the Murray State softball team in Saturday's doubleheader loss to SIUE at Racer Field in Murray, as it was edged twice by the Cougars, 2-0 and 2-1.
SIUE struck the opening blow of game one in the first when Rachel Keller singled to score Jordan LaFave, who reached on her own single earlier in the inning. LaFave went on to score the game's only other run in the third when she blasted a home run to cap the scoring at 2-0.
While the Racers only had two hits in the game, by Jessica Twaddle and Brenna Finck, they still had their chances. SIUE committed three errors and walked two batters in the contest, but MSU could not convert and left five stranded.
Mason Robinson took the loss for Murray State by allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
In game two, the Cougars once again wasted little time scoring and made it 1-0 on a LaFave double that scored Alyssa Heren, who tripled to start the game. However, the Racers countered in the third with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Maddie Glass that scored Twaddle to tie the game at one.
In the fourth, the Racers survived a passed ball with a runner on third thanks to quick defensive thinking from catcher Jocelynn Rodgers and pitcher Amber Van Duyse to get the runner at the plate. Despite the save, SIUE would score on the very next play on a wild pitch that allowed Talisa Morton to cross the plate to make it 2-1.
The Racers would go on to hold the Cougars hitless in the last 2.2 innings, but they could not score themselves and fell, 2-1. Robinson finished the final two and two-third innings of the game by allowing no runs on no hits and no walks. Haven Campbell began the game for Murray State and allowed one run on three hits over 0.0 official innings, while Van Duyse pitched 4.1 innings of relief in which she gave up just one run on four hits and a walk and earned the loss.
Madison Culver led MSU at 2-for-3 in the game, while Finck notched MSU's other hit and went 1-for-2.
The Racers and Cougars return to Racer Field Sunday at 1 p.m., for the third and final game of the series.
