This Weekend's Games
After a 3-0, walk-off, 10-inning win over SIUE Sunday, the Murray State softball team will look to capitalize on that momentum Wednesday when it travels to Lipscomb. First pitch at Draper Diamond in Nashville is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Previously On Racer Softball
The Racers dropped the first two games of its series with SIUE, but avoided the sweep in a big way on Sunday. The Cougars swept Saturday's doubleheader, winning 2-0 and 2-1, but MSU took the finale in grand fashion with a walk-off three-run home run from Jocelynn Rodgers. Also, integral in the win was a gritty 10-inning shutout performance from pitcher Mason Robinson, in which she allowed just three hits.
All-Time vs. Lipscomb
Wednesday will be the first meeting between Murray State and Lipscomb since 2014 and the Racers first trip to Draper Diamond since 2010. The two teams have met three times previous, with the Bisons coming away with all three wins.
Scouting The Bisons
The Bisons will enter Wednesday at 22-22 overall and 7-8 in the Atlantic Sun, after dropping two of three last weekend at Stetson. Caitlin Plocheck was the hero of the game two win, as she homered twice in the 9-4 victory.
Brittany Elmore currently leads the Lipscomb offense at .393, while Sarah Higgins and Abby Fenichel have 31 RBIs each to go along with .367 and .312 averages, respectively. As a team, the Bisons hit .272, while also slugging an impressive .398 as a team. As a staff, the Bisons pitcher currently have a 2.85 ERA with 320 strikes and 121 walks, they are currently averaging 2.6 strikeouts for every walk. Kelly Young and Tanner Sanders have split time in the circle virtually down the middle this season with Young going 11-8 with a 3.03 ERA and Sanders turning in a 2.45 ER and a 9-12 record. Young is currently 22nd nationally with strikeouts at 168 and 17th in strikeouts per seven innings at 9.1.
Weather Forecast
Game time temperature in Nashville Wednesday is forecasted to be a cloudy 78° F, which a chance of thunderstorms earlier in the afternoon. From 5 p.m. on, there will be 0-percent chance of rain with very low winds at 2-4 mph.
Déjà Vu
Sunday's walk-off home run against SIUE, was the second time in her career that Jocelynn Rodgers had sent the Racers off the field winners with a long ball. In 2014, down 4-2 in the seventh to EIU at home, Rodgers smacked a grand slam to give MSU the 6-4 win.
Record Retirement
Jessica Twaddle retired 21 runners Sunday against SIUE to set a new school single-game record for putouts. She now owns the top five performances in program history for that category.
Going The Distance
Mason Robinson recorded the longest solo shutout in school history Sunday by going the full 10 innings in the win. The 10 frames breaks her own previous record of nine which she set earlier this season when the Racers beat Missouri State, 1-0, at Western Kentucky. Robinson has now thrown the only two extended inning solo shutouts in MSU history.
Lucky Number Ten
Sunday's 10-inning win over SIUE marks the second time that the Racers have bested the Cougars in 10 innings. In 2014, Murray State used a sacrifice fly from Leslie Bridges to top SIUE, 5-4, also in 10 frames.
Up Next
Murray State returns home this weekend to host a pair of doubleheaders with Tennessee Tech Saturday and league-leading Jacksonville State Sunday.
