6/3/2016 4:40:00 PM | Rifle
Murray State rifle junior Ivan Roe sits just three-tenths of a point away from making his Olympic dreams a reality after day one of the 2016 USA Shooting Rifle/Pistol Olympic Air Trials at Camp Perry near Port Clinton, Ohio.
The event, which features 13 of the best shooters in the nation, began with a preliminary round in which Roe shot a 622.8 to finish in sixth place. His sixth-place finish in the opening relay earned in him a spot in the eight-man final, in which bonus points were awarded to the shooters based on finish. The Manhattan, Montana native took care of business in the finals by picking up the win and the maximum eight bonus points.
With the eight points added to his total from the prelims, Roe now has a score of 630.8, just three-tenths of a point out of second place. Saturday and Sunday at the trials will follow the same format as Friday, with the two highest totals at the end of the weekend earning spots on Team USA for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Lucas Kozeniesky of NC State currently leads the event with a 634.5, while Daniel Lowe of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit sits in second at 631.1. Roe currently has a 3.0 point lead on his nearest competition, recent West Virginia graduate Garrett Spurgeon who finished the opening day at 627.8.
