Racers Open Title Defense With Sweep

The two-time defending OVC Champion Murray State volleyball team began defense of its conference crown Friday night at Racer Arena and produced a season-high .415 team hitting percentage while picking up its second sweep of the season with a 25-15, 25-21 and 29-27 victory over UT Martin.
Scottie Ingram led the way in the sweep for the Racers (6-7, 1-0 OVC) with a monster 17-kill, .538 hitting percentage-performance. Ingram also led the way with a match-high 13 digs to record her 10th double-double of the season.
Olivia Chatman had 11 kills on the night and hit an incredible .846 while Kristen Besselsen added 10 kills and Dacia Brown chipped in with eight and hit .467. Brown also led the way defensively at the net with two block assists and had a match-high two service aces.
In addition to leading the Racers to a .415 hitting percentage, Hannah Stultz also tallied a career-high 51 assists (17 per set) on the night and also had three digs, an ace and a block assist. In the back row, libero Ellie Lorenz had 11 digs in the sweep and Alex Kaufmann added five.
The Skyhawks (4-12, 0-1 OVC) hit .255 as a team and also out-blocked the Racers 5-2 in the match. MSU had twice as many aces on the night, (4-2) but also had twice as many serving errors (10-5) as well.
With the win, MSU has now won six consecutive home and OVC openers and pushed its program record regular season winning streak to 17 in a row at Racer Arena.
The Racers look to make it a perfect weekend Saturday as Southeast Missouri comes to town for a 2 p.m. match.
