Junior Robert Broadstreet tied a school record in air rifle with a 597, as the third-ranked Murray State rifle team shot a 4708 to defeat both fifth-ranked Kentucky and 13th-ranked Ole Miss, which shot a 4664 and 4624, respectively, Saturday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford, Mississippi.
The Racers shot a 2334 in smallbore and a 2374 in air rifle en route to their fifth consecutive 4700-plus performance. Junior Ivan Roe led the way in smallbore with a 589, while sophomores Barbara Schläpfer and MacKenzie Martin followed at 582. Junior Ben Estes shot a 581 in the event, while sophomore Alathea Sellars rounded out the counters for Murray State. Other Racer scores in smallbore were Broadstreet's 588, freshman Meike Drewell's 576 and freshman Shelby Huber's 570.
In air rifle, Roe and Sellars followed Broadstreet's 597 by each shooting a 594, while Martin and Estes followed at 589 and 582, respectively. Huber notched a career-high 590 on the gun, while Schläpfer shot a 589 and Drewell fired a 586. Broadstreet's 597 in air rifle and 588 in smallbore gave him a career-high aggregate score of 1185 to lead Murray State on the day.
"I was really proud of the job we did today on only one week's practice," said head coach Alan Lollar. "To stay above 4700 for the fifth straight match is a great achievement."
"I am really proud of Shelbey and Meike, as they were both very solid today," continued Lollar. "Ivan showed his normal consistency and Ben had a good day, as well. Barbara had a good day and worked through some things well. Kenzie also had a good consistent day and Alathea had a great air rifle. Bobby had a really good day on both guns and is really starting to perform at a very high and consistent level."
"Now we will focus on hosting next week's Withrow Invitational, where we will once again go shoulder-to-shoulder with Kentucky, as well as welcome North Georgia, UAB, UT Martin, Memphis, Jacksonville State, Ole Miss and North Carolina State."
The 2017 Withrow Invitational will take place Friday, January 20 at 8 a.m. at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Kentucky.
