The Murray State women's tennis team competed in its second fall tournament of the year, as they took part in the UCA Invitational on September 29-30 in Conway, Ark. Featured in the tournament along with the Racers were Central Arkansas and Missouri State.
"We went to the tournament knowing that we were going to play a lot of tough matches, and overall I'm happy with the way we played. Our main goals going to the tournament were to treat every single point the same way no matter what the score was, and to focus on our decision making to make sure we could handle mistakes and give us the best chance to win points. We made a lot of improvements in those areas, but we still have a lot of work to do. Fall tournaments are good to give us a little bit of rhythm, but the main focus is to see the mistakes that we are making and correct them for the spring," said head coach Jorge Caetano
The Racers played four rounds of singles and three rounds of doubles while at Central Arkansas, which included big wins for Amina Hadzic and Jeanne Masson in the first round, both winning identically 6-2 and 6-1.
Hadzic and Sara Bjork came through for Murray in round four. Hadzic won 6-2 and 6-0 while Bjork was pushed to a third set, going 7-5, 2-6, and 10-5.
The Racers were strong in doubles as well, seeing the combo of Sara Loncarevic and Stasya Sharapova winning 6-3 in the first round. Loncarevic and Sharapova were able to pick up another win in round two as well, defeating their opposition 7-6.
"I was very happy to see Amina getting two big wins and playing some great tennis. I am sure these wins are going to increase her confidence moving forward with our season," said Caetano. "Another great positive was to see our doubles pair of Sara and Stasya going 2-1 this weekend playing for the first time together, I was very pleased with the way they played and supported each other during those matches."
The Racers will compete in the Southern Missouri Invitational to wrap up their fall schedule on Saturday, October 7.
