The Murray State women host Butler Wednesday in an 11 a.m., tip in the Racers 2017-18 home opener at the CFSB Center. MSU is coming off an 89-81 loss Sunday at Evanville in the season opener. Ke'Shunan James recorded 30 points and 13 rebounds in the loss while Bria Bethea had a career-high 28 against the Purple Aces and also grabbed 10 boards.
Sunday marked the first time since February 15, 2017 against Eastern Illinois that two Racers have recorded double-doubles in the same game. It was the 13th double-double of James' career and second for Bethea.
James took home her eighth career ADIDAS OVC Player of the Week award for her efforts Sunday. James also recorded five assists and two steals in the game and shared the weekly honor with Tennessee State's Tia Wooten. James is now in a tie with Mariah Robinson (2009-13) for seventh place on the all-time career scoring list in program history with 1,583 career points. Next up on the list is Jennifer Parker (1990-94) at 1,680.
The Bulldogs enter Wednesday morning's tilt 1-0 on the year as they won their season opener against Austin Peay Saturday, 75-54. Whitney Jennings scored a game-high 30 points in the victory over the Governors while Tori Schickel added 14 and Michelle Weaver chipped in with 11 points. Butler shot 49 percent in the win and made four 3-pointers while holding APSU to just 36 percent shooting from the floor and 29 percent from long range. Shickel was an All-Big East Second Team honoree last season while reserve Sydney Shelton made the All-Freshman Team in 2016-17. Kurt Godlevske is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Bulldogs.
This will be the 20th season for the Racers playing in "The Bank." The Racers are 11-8 all-time in home openers at the CFSB Center and are looking for their third straight win in openers.
