For the second straight season, the Murray State rifle team finished the third at the NCAA Championships Saturday at French Field House in Columbus, Ohio.
The Racers shot a 2366 in air rifle Saturday to finish at 4692 overall. West Virginia shot a 4723 to win its fifth consecutive national title, while TCU finished second at 4706.
"We entered the event in third and finished third, said head coach Alan Lollar. "West Virginia and TCU were our only two losses during the season. They had amazing years and are to be congratulated on great seasons."
"Having all five shooters at 580 or better in smallbore was big," Lollar continued. "It shows our depth. I think we learned things this weekend that will help us get better. It's been a good year, a consistent year. Bobby came up big this weekend with a solid performance in both guns and Kenzie, Ivan, Ben and Barbara did a good job, as well. Bobby, Kenzie and Ivan also had good aggregate scores this weekend. We shot two points better than last year and I'm extremely proud of this team, top to bottom, they are champs because of the effort and commitment to the team."
MacKenzie Martin shot a team-high 594 to lead MSU in air rifle, while Ivan Roe followed at 593. Robert Broadstreet was next in line for the Racers at 591, while Barbara Schläpfer and Ben Estes rounded out Murray State's day at 588 and 587, respectively. Roe led the Racers in the championship with an aggregate of 1176, with Broadstreet and Martin following close behind at 1174.
"This match was everything I thought it would be, said Broadstreet after Saturday's competition. I was nervous coming in but it all settled down once the shooting started. It was the toughest match I have ever shot and I'm glad I could contribute to a good team effort."
For the second straight season, Roe set new Murray State records for season averages for all three categories. The junior ended the year with 587.4 smallbore average, a 594.1 air rifle average and an 1181.5 aggregate average. Throughout the course of the season, Roe also set all three program single-match records as well.
