The Murray State softball team shutout Northern Illinois, 9-0 in six innings, Sunday at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky to finish the 2017 Racer Classic with a perfect 5-0 record.
Mason Robinson posted her fourth solo shutout of the season in the game by allowing no runs on just three with four strikeouts and a walk. The win not only pushed Robinson's season record to 13-2 on the year, but it went down as the 58th win of her career making her the winningest pitcher in Murray State history. The previous record was 57 wins set by CheyAnnye Gaskey from 2012 to 2015.
Offensively, the Racers pounded out 10 hits in the game, marking the 10th time this year that they have tallied 10 or more hits in a contest. Jessica Twaddle was one of two Racers to drive in two runs on the day, including the first run of the game on a double in the first inning. In addition to her two RBIs, Twaddle ended the day at 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks.Â
Maggie Glass also drive in two runs in the game, one on a sacrifice bunt in the third and the other on a RBI-grounder in the sixth. Cayla Levins also had a good day at the plate for MSU Sunday, as she went 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI-triple.
The win moves the Racers to 20-4 on the season, marking the fastest a MSU team has ever reached the 20-win plateau. The previous record was 32 games, a feat that was accomplished by the 2015 edition of the Racers. The win was also the ninth consecutive by Murray State, tying the longest winning streak in school history, which was set in 2012.
On Wednesday, the Racers will close out a seven-game home stand with a doubleheader against Western Illinois. First pitch at Racer Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
