Racers Rally to Score 10-Straight Runs in Victory
3/8/2017 9:46:00 PM | Baseball
Hicks was one of five Racers to record multiple-hits in the win as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs as well. Brandon Gutzler went 2-for-4 as well at the dish and also racked up a team-best four ribbies on the night. Adam Bauer was 2-of-3 with two runs and three RBIs and Aaron Bence went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs. Davis Sims led MSU with three hits on the night and added two runs and two RBIs.
The Salukis (7-5) jumped on the Racers (8-4) early as they scored three runs in three of the first four innings and grabbed a commanding 9-0 lead. MSU scratched across three runs in the fifth as a Jaron Robinson RBI double pushed across MSU's first run of the game. Two batters later Bauer added a sacrifice fly and Gutzler singled to third later in the inning to make it 9-3.
After SIU responded with a three-run top of the sixth, the Racer bats really came alive in the bottom half of the inning as MSU scored six runs in the sixth and cut the deficit down to 12-9. Sims had a two-run single to left to start the scoring and Bauer hit his second triple of the season and 10th of his career later in the inning to plate two more. Hicks scored on a wild pitch and Gutzler added another sac fly as well.
In the eighth, Gutzler hit a monster two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit down to 12-11 on his fourth blast of the year. After a Lawrence walk and a Bence bunt single, Hicks delivered his heroics with one out in the eighth.
Chad Gendron came on and pitched a clean ninth to record his third save of the season as he struck-out a pair of batters. Blake Clynes got the win as he had a solid two inning appearance for MSU in the seventh and eighth, including striking out the side in the seventh.
Jack Hranec got the start on the mound and pitched two innings. Caleb Arbeiter, Luke Brown, John Lollar and Alec Whaley also made relief appearances on the night.
MSU returns to action and begins OVC play Friday as the Racers travel to face SIU Edwardsville in a three-game series. Due to inclement weather in the forecast on Saturday, the weekend schedule has adjusted some as the Racers and Cougars will now play a doubleheader Friday beginning at noon. Game three of the series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m., as originally scheduled, weather permitting. Â
