The Murray State soccer team first half surge carried the team to a 2-1 victory over Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay in the Heritage Bank Battle of the Border at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Â
The Racers (9-3-1, 5-2 OVC) handed the Governors (8-6- 1, 3-4-1 OVC) their first home loss in 23 matches. MSU also ended Austin Peay's home OVC unbeaten streak at 16.
Â
Murray State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute after a deflection in the box lead Rebecca Kubin to a one-on-one chance versus the Governors' goalkeeper. The shifty sophomore weaved her way around APSU's defense and sent a low shot past into the net for her fourth score of the season.Â
Â
The sophomore showed no signs of slowing her offensive attack, as she connected with her second score of the night in at 29:26. Murray State's second goal of the night came after Elizabeth Tilton soared a cross into the box finding Kubin, who finished by sending the ball into the far corner to extend MSU's lead to 2-0.Â
Â
Heading into the half, the Racers boasted a 2-0 lead on eight shots while the Govs managed to post seven shots of their own. Â
Â
Austin Peay wasted no time getting themselves back into the game after the half, as the Governors put a score on the board just one minute into the second stanza. APSU's Caroline Wistrom drew Alex Steigerwald out of the goal and sailed a 30-yard shot into an empty net to bring the Govs within one score of the Racers.Â
Â
Murray State answered with a flurry of offensive chances, including a strike by Miyah Watford that missed just shy of the net after sailing into the post in the 75th minute. Despite being held scoreless in the second half, the Racers managed to maintain the 2-1 advantage for the win in the Heritage Bank Battle of the Border.Â
Â
The Racers return home to host Belmont in additional OVC action at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky, Sunday at 1 p.m.
