Grogan Scores First MSU Goal - Racers Roll Past Belmont 4-1

The Murray State soccer team saw three Racers with goals en route to a 4-1 win over Ohio Valley Conference opponent Belmont at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
Following the victory, the Racers (10-3-1, 6-2 OVC) remain unbeaten on home turf and improve to 7-0 this season. Additionally, Murray State has been perfect in 14 matches at Cutchin Field dating back to September 28, 2018, against Southeast Missouri.Â
Abby Jones got things started for the Racers' high-powered offense in the first half, as the freshman received a cross from Elizabeth Tilton and placed her shot in the top-right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute. Emma Heise followed with a goal of her own just six minutes later off an assist from Rebecca Kubin.Â
Jones connected on her second goal of the contest three minutes shy of the halftime intermission. The goal came after Murray State drew a penalty kick inside the box when Belmont committed a costly handball inside the box. Jones then converted the penalty kick and sent5 the Racers into the locker room with a 3-0 advantage.Â
Both squads tried to establish set the tempo to begin the second half, leading to a physical effort by both sides. The Racers managed to sneak another goal by Belmont at the 59:59 mark, as Lydia Grogan scored her first career goal for MSU by sending a blazing shot from outside of the box past the Bruins' goalkeeper for a 4-0 score.Â
The Bruins refused a shutout and managed to get on the board with 11:37 left in the contest. Belmont's Emily Nguyen found forward Julie Garst for the Bruins' lone score as the Murray State secured the 4-1 victory. Murray State finished with 21 shots with ten on target, while Belmont collected 13 of their own.
The Racers will wrap up the final two games of the regular-season at Cutchin Field. Murray State faces off against Morehead State (Oct. 19) before ending the season in a match with Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 21) in Murray, Kentucky, ahead of the OVC Tournament.Â
