10/2/2018 4:47:00 PM | Women's Golf
You can call them the 'Comeback Kids' after the Murray State women's golf team turned a four-shot deficit into a 12-shot win in the final round of the F&M Bank Austin Peay Intercollegiate at Clarksville Country Club in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Â
Trailing Louisiana-Monroe 603 to 599 heading into the last 18 holes, the Racers carded the low round of any team in the event with a 290, while ULM had a 306.
Â
The win for the Racers (299-304-290=893) marks their first in three fall events after also producing a second and third place finish. Â
Â
MSU senior Linette posted her third-straight second-place finish when she battled ULM's Jahaanvie Walia for the medalist title. Starting the day four shots back, Holmslykke made a good run with a 71, but came up one shot short of forcing a playoff. Holmslykke, who was leading the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring average coming into the week, carded scores of 72-75-71=218.
Â
The Racers' brilliant final round pushed four of their starting five into the top-10 including Jane Watts in third place on scores of 74-76-73=223 and Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria in seventh place on rounds of 74-76-73=223 and Raeysha Surendran who posted scored of 76-79-72=228 for a seventh place finish. Freshman Sarah McDowell contributed a 14th place finish on scores of 76-79-75=230.
Â
MSU's Anna Moore and Taylor Church played the tournament as individuals. Moore had her best showing of the fall with a sixth place finish on scores of 75-76-73=224. Church had scores of 83-77-75=235.
Â
The Racers have won the APSU event four times. They also took the championship in 2003, 2010 and 2011.
Â
Next up for the Racers is an appearance at the Fred Marx Invitational (Oct. 15-16) in Monroe, Louisiana at the Bayou Desiard Country Club.
