Jones Scores As Racers Clash With UT Martin
10/5/2018 11:28:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Murray State soccer team's second-half push fell short in an Ohio Valley Conference battle with UT Martin, as the Skyhawks went on to top the Racers 3-1 at Skyhawk Field in Martin, Tennessee, Friday.
Â
Early in the first half, it looked as if neither team was going to be able to get much going offensively. UT Martin managed to change the pace in the 20th minute, as Skylor Keane got the Skyhawks on the board after sneaking a goal past the Murray State defense for the 1-0 advantage. Just before the intermission, UTM registered their second score at the 43:48 mark to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. The Racers recorded only four shots while the Skyhawks had just seven to end the first stanza.Â
Â
Murray State seemed to have rejuvenated energy early into the second half, as Abby Jones successfully converted a penalty kick to put MSU on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the Racers could not find the back of the net for the remainder of the contest.
Â
The final goal of the night came when Sara Ketis sent a cross into the middle of the box, finding Amy McGivern open for a close shot and a score to secure the Skyhawks win 3-1. Following the loss, the Racers are 8-3-1 on the season and are now 4-2 in OVC competition on the year.Â
UT Martin (9-2-1, 4-0-1) finished the match outshooting the Racers 19-12, with eight shots on goal compared to MSU's five. Abby Jones led the Racers with 3 shots with two on target while Rebecca Kubin and Miyah Watford each finished with two shots with one on net in the match.
Â
The Racers will return to the Volunteer State the next week to take on OVC rival Austin Peay (Oct. 12) in the Battle of the Border. Murray State will wrap up their regular season in Murray, as they come back to Cutchin Field to face Belmont (Oct. 14), Morehead State (Oct. 19), and Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 21) ahead of the OVC Tournament.Â
