OVC Release
Murray State men's basketball saw rookie sensation Ja Morant named Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week after his performance in Racer wins over Austin Peay and SIUE for the week of Feb. 5-11.
The OVC weekly awards are voted on the league's sports information directors and announced by the league office in Brentwood, Tennessee.
As the Racers pushed their winning streak to seven to stay in a share of OVC first place at 12-2, Morant nearly averaged a triple-double in the two wins.
Having already recorded a triple-double this season (Dec. 28) against Eastern Illinois, Morant averaged 10.5 points per game, 10 rebounds and 9.5 assists per game for the games against APSU and SIUE. In Saturday's win at SIUE, he was close to another triple-double with 10 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists. In the game against APSU, he scored 10 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out eight assists.
This is Morant's third OVC Freshman of the Week honor after being named on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. Morant's teammate Jonathan Stark has been named OVC Player of the Week three times this season on Dec. 26, Jan. 2 and Jan. 8.
The Racers are back at home this week for their final regular season games at the CFSB Center for the 2017-18 season. Thursday, the Racers host Jacksonville State and Saturday is Senior Day when Terrell Miller, Jr., and Jonathan Stark are honored before the Racers take on Tennessee Tech. Both dates are women's/men's doubleheaders that have a 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. tip times.
