Racers Split Day One Of February Freezer
2/16/2018 6:01:00 PM | Softball
Just The Facts
The Murray State softball team went 1-1 Friday in Mississippi State's February Freezer at Nusz Park In Starkville, Mississippi. The Racers opened the day with a 5-3 win over Drake, but fell in game two to the host Bulldogs, 6-1.
Game One – Murray State 5, Drake 3
How It Happened
The game was a scoreless tie until the top of the fourth when Madison Culver led off the frame with a single and was followed by back-to-back walks from Lillie Goetz and Dani Walls. With the bases loaded, Lexi Jones stepped to the plate and belted her second grand slam in five games to give MSU a 4-0 lead. Drake finally got on the board with one run in the bottom of fourth, however Maddy Feeney answered in the fifth with a RBI single to make it 5-1. The Bulldogs attempted a rally in the bottom of the sixth, but two runs was all they could muster, as Murray State held on for the 5-3 win.
In The Circle
Haven Campbell moved to 2-1 on the season with the win after allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeout and three walks over six full innings of work. Grace Vaughn earned the save for Murray State after allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout in the seventh.
Offensive Highlights
Jones finished the game at 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Culver was the only other player with multiple hits as she went 2-for-4.
The Four Horsewomen
With her second grand slam of the year, Lexi Jones became just the fourth Murray State player in program history to hit two grand slams in the same season. She joins Jenna Bradley and Lauren Buch, who did so in 2011, and Leslie Bridges, who accomplished the feat in 2012.
Game One – Mississippi State 6, Murray State 1
How It Happened
The Racers struck first after Brenna Finck walked and scored on two wild pitches in the opening stanza. However, from that point on it was all Mississippi State as they reeled off six unanswered to pick up the 6-1 win.
In The Circle
Olivia Suski (0-2) took the loss for the Racers after giving up three earned runs on five hits over one full inning. Vaughn came on in relief of Suski and went 3.1 innings for MSU, giving up just one run on three hits, while Van Duyse was solid and gave up no runs on one hit with a strikeout over the final 1.2 innings of the game.
Offensive Highlights
The Racers could only come up with three hits off the combination Emily Williams and Candace Denis in the contest. Sierra Gilmore tallied two of the hits and finished the game at 2-for-3, while Goetz tallied the only extra base hit of the game for Murray State, a double.
First Strike
Finck's walk and eventual score in the first inning was the first and only run allowed by Mississippi State this season through their first six games.
OK, What's Next?
The Racers continue play in the February Freezer Saturday by taking on South Alabama at 11 a.m., followed by a rematch with Drake at 6:30 p.m.
