Racers Set New Records In Split at Troy

Just The Facts
The Murray State softball team scored a program-best 21 runs Saturday to beat Tennessee Tech in its first game of the day at the 2018 Trojan Classic at the Trojan Softball Complex in Troy, Alabama. However in game two, the host Trojans edged the Racers, 3-2, to give MSU a split on the day.
Game 1 – Murray State 21, Tennessee Tech 0 (5 Inn.)
How It Happened
The Racers took advantage of nearly every miscue by the Golden Eagles, leading the Racers to score 21 runs on only 12 hits. MSU drew nine walks in the contest and stole three bases in addition to Tennessee Tech's five passed balls and eight wild pitches. The biggest innings of the game for the Racers came in the second and third when they put up seven and nine runs, respectively.
Seven players tallied hits in the game with five coming up with two or more. In addition, of the 13 players that appeared offensively for the Racers, every single player recorded at least one statistic whether it be a hit, run or walk. As a team, Murray State also hit for the cycle in the game with two doubles, a triple and home run.
In The Circle
Haven Campbell allowed just three hits over 4.0 innings in the combined shutout with one strikeout to move to 4-2 on the season, while Amber Van Duyse allowed no hits with one strikeout in the final frame.
Records Were Meant To Be Broken
The 21 runs scored in the game by Murray State broke the previous MSU single-game record for runs of 19 which was set against Tennessee State in 2011. The Racers also set a new RBI mark in the game with 17, besting the previous record of 16 set in the same game against TSU.
The Big Bat
Lexi Jones belted out her team-high fourth home run of the season in the game. In addition, she finished the game at 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs giving her 14 for the season, which is also a team high.
Making The Most
Brenna Finck let no opportunity at the plate go to waste in the game as she was 2-for-2 with two walks. In addition, she scored three runs and drove in two more.
One Happy Gilmore
Sierra Gilmore drove in a game-high four runs to go along with a 2-for-3 clip at the plate, three runs, a walk and her first collegiate triple.
Multiple Multiples
Jones, Gilmore and Finck were not the only one to have multiples in a statistical category as Jensen Striegel and Lillie Goetz each had two hits in the in the game, while Logan Braundmeier, Leah Kesel and Striegel each scored twice. Goetz also had three runs in the opener, while Striegel and Braundmeier also had two RBIs.
Game 2 – Troy 3, Murray State 2
How It Happened
The Trojans got on board in the opening stanza by scoring Logan Calhoun, who began the frame with a single, on two straight sacrifice bunts. Troy then added another run in the third inning on a double to the wall from Madeline Porter that scored Calhoun.
In the fourth, however, Sierra Gilmore tied the game with one swing of the bat on a home that also scored Brenna Finck, who reached on a walk. The tie held until the sixth when Troy scored on an identical play from its double in the third, with Porter once again hitting a double and Calhoun scoring to seal the 3-2 win.
In The Circle
Olivia Suski gave up three runs on six hits in the contest, while striking out two, to fall to 2-0 on the season. Peyton Glover went the distance for Troy and gave up two runs on two hits with two walks, while fanning 10 Racers.
First Time Around
Gilmore's home run in the fourth was the first of her career. It was a day of firsts for the freshman, as she tallied her first triple in the first game against Tennessee Tech.
