Racer Rally Falls Short At SLU
3/20/2018 5:53:00 PM | Softball
After falling in an early hole after two Saint Louis home runs, the Murray State softball team manufactured four runs, but it was not enough, as the Racers fell to the Billikens, 5-4, Tuesday at the Billiken Sports Center in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Sadie Wise began the scoring for Saint Louis in the first with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. However, in the second, MSU answered when Brenna Finck scored on a SLU error to cut the lead to 3-1. From that point, Saint Louis would go on to push the lead to 5-1 on a solo home run from Mackenzie Lawson and a sacrifice fly from Allie McFarlane.
Though down, Murray State was not out. The Racers added two in the fourth on a RBI groundout from Finck and a single from Madison Culver. The Racers further closed the gap in the sixth when Finck scored for the second time on a Billiken error. Despite having two additional base runners in the sixth and a full seventh, the Racers were unable to capitalize and fell, 5-4.
Lillie Goetz was 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored and a triple, while Finck was 1-for-2 with a RBI and two runs. Culver was also solid at the plate on the day and went 2-for-3 with a run. Amber Van Duyse took the complete game loss for the Racers in the circle by allowing four earned runs on seven hits with no walks or strikeouts over six innings.
Murray State returns to action Saturday when it opens OVC play at Eastern Kentucky with a doubleheader at Noon central, followed by a doubleheader Sunday at Morehead State at 11 a.m. CT.
