Racers Fail to Come Up With Timely Hits at SEMO

Southeast Missouri homered three times and scored five of its seven runs via the long ball as Murray State lost a tough 7-4 contest Friday night in Cape Girardeau, Mo., in the first game of the series with the Redhawks.

The Racers (17-20, 5-11 OVC) were unable to get a key hit late as they left 10 runners stranded, including the bases loaded in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. SEMO (18-20, 12-7 OVC) broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run inning to push ahead for good in the contest.

After SEMO opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the second to go up 3-0, MSU was able to get on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth. Ryan Perkins singled up the gut to score Ramsey Scott and then Gavin Wehby singled to right field to score Mike Farnell and cut the deficit to 3-2.

In the sixth, Kyle Stevens knotted up the score at 3-3 with a single that brought home Scott. In the sixth, the Redhawks regained the lead with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 4-3 before Farnell tied it back up with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the top of the seventh.

Stevens led MSU with a 2-for-4 night in the loss while Farnell was 1-of-2. Scott went 1-for-3 with a double and the two runs scored. SEMO out-hit the Racers 10-8 with both teams recording errors leading to one unearned run each.

Braydon Cook took the loss in relief on the night as he pitched three innings and allowed the three runs in the seventh. Trevor McMurray got the start, went five-plus innings, and allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five batters.

The two teams will close the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., from Capaha Field. Saturday was changed to a doubleheader due to forecasted rain for Sunday in Cape Girardeau.
