WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Murray State Baseball dropped the series finale at Purdue, 17-8, Sunday afternoon as the Boilermakers completed the weekend sweep. The result marked the third time the Racers have been swept this season, with all three instances occurring on the road.
Despite the offensive output, defensive struggles hindered the Racers as they committed three errors on the afternoon. With the wind gusting out toward center field, the two teams combined for 25 runs and 22 hits in a contest that lasted over three and a half hours.
Kingsley Guthrie launched his second home run of the season in the sixth inning to tie the contest at 6-6. Guthrie's two-run blast extended the Racers' (27-21, 12-6 MVC) streak to three consecutive games with a home run.
Dylan Zentko made his second start of the year, tossing 1.1 innings. All four runs charged to Zentko came via a Purdue (32-15, 15-9 Big Ten) grand slam in the second inning.
Luke Mistone put MSU on the board in the third with a two-run single to left-center field, bringing his RBI total to 47 on the year. A pair of Anthony Perritano sacrifice flies accounted for the next two Murray State runs after Purdue pushed its lead to six. Perritano is the second Racer to record multiple sacrifice flies in a single game.
After Guthrie's homer tied the game, the Boilermakers regained control by plating seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Murray State allowed five free passes, four walks and a hit-by-pitch, along with two wild pitches in the back half of the sixth inning.
Murray State added two runs in the late innings behind a Kainen Jorge sacrifice fly and a Colby Ott RBI single, but the comeback effort fell short.
Ott, Daylan Pena, and Kristofer Hokenson each recorded multi-hit performances, with the trio collecting two singles apiece.
Six Racers saw action on the mound, led by Drew Deremer's four innings of work. Deremer allowed seven runs, six earned, and was credited with the loss, moving his season record to 3-1.
Murray State looks to bounce back at home Tuesday as they host UT Martin in a non-conference matchup.
