Gilmore’s Blast Earns Racers Split With SIUE
4/29/2018 5:45:00 PM | Softball
The Murray State softball team kept their postseason hopes alive by splitting a pair of games with SIUE Sunday at Racer Field. The Racers won the opener, 2-0, but dropped the finale, 1-0.
In the opener, the game was literally decided with one swing of the bat when Sierra Gilmore broke open a 0-0 tie in the sixth with two-run home run. Gilmore's fifth round tripper of the season would be all the offense Murray State would need, as they held on for the 2-0 win.
Madison Culver led Murray State in the game by going 2-for-3 with a run and a double, while Haven Campbell allowed just two hits with a strikeout and a walk over a full seven innings.
In game two, SIUE wasted little time getting on the board thanks to a solo home run from Zoe Schaefer in the top of the first. That lead would hold for the rest of the game, as the Racers could not muster any runs despite having chances including a bases loaded situation in the fifth.
Jensen Striegel was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the game, while Grace Vaughn allowed just one run on six hits with a career-high five strikeouts and no walks.
The Racers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Morehead State for a 1 p.m. ET doubleheader.
