The Murray State softball team split a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at University Field in Morehead, Kentucky with a 1-0 win in game one and 4-3 loss in game two.
In game one, Erika Downey began the third inning with a single and then advanced to third on a stolen base and an error by the Eagles. Downey was then brought home in the next at bat on a ground out by Jensen Striegel for the 1-0 leads.
Downey's run proved to be all the offense the Racers' needed as Haven Campbell pitched a one-hit shutout with a strikeout and four walks over seven complete innings.
In game two, Madison Culver came up big for Murray State in the top of the first with a three-run home run, her third of the year. However, Morehead State cut the lead to one in the second on RBIs from Hannah Murphy and Taylor Wheeler. The score remained at 3-2 until the fifth inning when Ellen Barrett hit a two-run shot to put the Eagles on top for good, 4-3.
Five different Racers had one hit in the game, including Brenna Finck who was 1-for-2 with a run and a RBI.
The Racers return to Racer Field Saturday to close out the 2018 regular season against Austin Peay in a Heritage Bank Battle of the Border doubleheader.
