Murray State's season ended late into the night Wednesday as the Racers fell to Eastern Kentucky 13-6 in an elimination game of the OVC Tournament in Oxford, Ala. The Racers close the season at 27-29 overall.
The Colonels (28-30) scored five runs in the bottom of the second to jump ahead of MSU 5-1 and didn't look back in the contest from there on. Brandon Gutzler got MSU on the board in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Grant Wood.
Trailing 6-1 in the fourth, Wood cut the deficit to 6-2 with an RBI single to left that brought home Bryan Chilton. EKU would respond with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 8-2 and then added another run in the fifth to make it 9-2. MSU also got a Gutzler solo home run to left field in the seventh, his 10th of the year to make it 9-3.
In the ninth, MSU got three runs to make things interesting, including a Davis Sims double to left center. The double was Sims' 29th of the season, which ties the single-season OVC record. Gutzler and Ramsey Scott also got RBI hits in the inning.
Gutzler, Jaron Robinson, Sims, Gavin Wehby and Wood led the Racers in the loss with two hits each. Luke Brown took the loss as he got the start and pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. The Racers used five relief pitchers in the loss.
