GoRacers.com Tell us a little bit about what you are doing this summer at your internship.
Tyler Bradley: This summer I am working at the Original Butterfly House & Insect World on Mackinac Island. I am working with the owners to learn how to operate and market a small business, specifically, a tourism-bases business, as the island and house are huge tourist attractions and vacation spots. I am working to boost ticket sales and make the gift stores as high-functioning as possible.Â
GR: How will this internship help you get a job in your field after graduation?
TB: This will help me get a job in the future as most business fields, especially marketing, require a few years of experience. With this experience I will have an edge after graduation and a goal of mine is to own a business one day, learning how a small business works now will help me that in that endeavor.Â
AVD: What is something you have already learned this summer that you did not know before?
TB: This summer I have learned that there are more parts to marketing a business than what it seems. It is much harder to push sales for a small business than a large one and there is a form of trial and error that goes along with the marketing. One thing might seems like a good idea and not work and then the idea that you thought was a waste of time ended up being what was needed. I've also learned that it is very hard to market to tourists and to market tourism in general
GR: What is the one thing you want to take away from this experience?
TB: The main thing I want to learn from this experience is about how a small business runs and the time and marketing that goes into a business. I feel as though I have only scratched the surface on how much time it takes to have a business like this running smoothly ,but I do realize now how hard it is for to market a small business on a small business budget.Â
GR: What has been your favorite thing that you have done so far?
TB: My favorite thing I have done on the job is having a business meeting off island about a new handout/take-one brochure that has been a great marketing move. I met my boss off the island and we talked about the ideas over breakfast then went to our printer to talk about my ideas. The brochure is now apart of the business and is handed out at every store. Â
