Wheeler Leads Consistent Racers At EKU Intercollegiate

The Murray State men's golf team came home with a fourth-place finish Sunday at the EKU Intercollegiate at The University Club at Arlington in Richmond, Kentucky.
In a field of 15 teams, the Racers were very consistent with scores of 286-288-289=863 as they edged out fifth-place UT Martin and SIUE (865) by two shots. Eastern Michigan (838) won the title, with Eastern Kentucky (848) and Morehead State (862) making up the top-3. Â
Murray State senior Gabe Wheeler led the way for the Racers with a spot in 13th place on rounds of 72-72-70=214, while freshman Dalton Bagwell posted scores of 70-73-72=215 for a 17th place finish. Other Racer scores and finishes included Connor Coombs in 29th place with rounds of 73-70-75=218 and Quinn Eaton in 67th place on scores of 81-73-72=226. The Racers' No. 1 player in their lineup, Austin Knight, carded a 71 in the first round, but withdrew from the second and final rounds.
Playing in the field of 94 competitors as an individual, MSU's Justin Wendling fired rounds of 74-77-75=226 and had a spot in 67th place.
The battle for the medalist title came down to SIUE's Kyle Slattery and EKU's Billy Basham who finished tied after 54 holes. Slattery birdied the first hole of a playoff to win the individual title.
The University Club at Arlington played to a par-70 and a distance of 6,623 yards.
The next challenge for the Racers is the SIUE Derek Donlenc Invitational (Sept. 24-25) at Gateway National Golf Course in Madison, Illinois.
