Monday Exhibition To Showcase New Look Racers
11/2/2019 9:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
After losing three starters from last year's squad, the 2019-20 Murray State women's basketball team has a lot to prove and will to make an opening statement Monday night in an exhibition contest against Georgetown (KY) at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.
After losing over 50-percent of its scoring and rebounding in the offseason, Murray State will have to turn to new faces and old faces alike in order to be successful. One of the faces hoping to lead her team to that success is 2019 OVC Freshman of the Year Macey Turley. Turley had an outstanding freshman campaign in which averaged 12.9 points and a team-high 4.4 assists per game.
Anchoring the team this year is its lone senior Cekeya Mack. While Mack did not score often last season, averaging just 3.8 points per game, she was always reliable shooting team best 55.1-percent from the floor as a junior. In addition to the leadership of Mack and Turley, third-year head coach Rechelle Turner is also expecting big things out of Turley's former Murray High School teammates, Lex Mayes and Alexis Burpo, as well as a trio of players returning from injury in Reagan Blackburn, Macie Gibson and Sadie Hill.
To help bridge the experience gap, Turner brought in three junior college transfers in the offseason in G'Torria Swinton, Ashley Hunter and Laci Hawthorne. Hunter finished second on the Morraine Valley all-time scoring list at 1,206 over her two years there, while Hawthorne helped lead New Mexico JC to a national runner-up finish and Swinton averaged a double-double for ASA Miami. Rounding out the 2019-20 squad for Turner are freshmen Jentri Worley, Lauren Jackson and Sarah Sutton.
Despite being an exhibition, Monday's opponent, Georgetown, will be no pushover, as the Tigers are already off to a 4-0 start to the season. Georgetown is currently outscoring its opponents, 77.3-55.8, on the year, led by 10.0 points per game from Kennedy Flynn. Lauren Bobbitt currently leads the Tigers in rebounding at 6.8 per game, while also adding 6.5 points.
Tip-off between the Racers and Tigers Monday is scheduled for 5:02 p.m. and will air live on ESPN+ and Froggy 103.7 FM.
