The Murray State women's basketball team picked up its third consecutive win Tuesday by defeating Arkansas State, 77-62, at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. The win marked the first victory for the Racers over a team from one of the 10 FBS conferences since defeating Ball State at home in 2012.
Murray State (4-2) used a big second quarter to secure the win by putting together a 13-0 run in the stanza and outscoring the Red Wolves, 21-8, in the frame. Arkansas State cut the lead to eight in the third and 10 in the fourth, but it would not get any closer as Murray State picked up the win in a game in which it led for over 37 minutes. Free throws were a big factor in the win for the Racers as they went 22-for-26 on the night including 16-for-18 in the fourth quarter.
Macey Turley became just the fourth player in MSU history to go 11-for-11 at the free throw line Tuesday and is now one of six players to shoot 100-percent from the charity stripe when attempting 11 or more free throws. The sophomore finished the game with 28 points, while Lex Mayes scored a career-high 18.
Alexis Burpo tied a career-high of nine rebounds to lead Murray State on the boards in the game, in addition to scoring 10 points. Lexi Hawthorne rounded out the four starters in double-digits in the game as she scored 12 and pulled down eight rebounds.
Murray State returns to action next Tuesday when it travels to Evansville to take on the Purple Aces at 6 p.m.
