Late Free Throws Lift Peay Past Racers
2/16/2019 4:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
While no field goals were scored by either team in the final two and a half minutes of Saturday's Heritage Bank Battle of the Border matchup, Austin Peay knocked down four free throws in the final 90 seconds to edge the Murray State women's basketball team at the Dunn Center in Clarksville, 59-56.
The Racers led for over the 30 minutes of the game, but a 7-0 run by the Govs to start the fourth quarter gave them the spark that they were looking for. With time waning, Brianah Ferby scored the last field goal by either team to bring Austin Peay within one, 56-55, with 2:45 to play. The Govs then hit two free throws at with 1:16 left to take the lead and two more with six seconds left to seal the 59-56 win.
The Racers actually outshot the Govs, 40.0 to 32.8, with each team making exactly 20 field goals. However, Austin Peay made three more 3-pointers in the game, at 11-8, which proved to be the difference on the day. Janika Griffith-Wallace led the Racers with 22 points, while Evelyn Adebayo added 16 to go along with nine rebounds.
With the end of the regular season in sight, the Racers now return home for three of their final four games, including two next weekend. On Thursday, the Racers will play host to the Skyhawks of UT Martin, followed by the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri Saturday.
