Racers Win On the Road At Saint Louis
2/16/2019 10:17:00 AM | Women's Tennis
The Murray State women's tennis team posted a 5-2 victory Friday over the Saint Louis Billikens in a match played at the St. Clair Tennis Club in O'Fallon, Illinois.
Â
The drama of the day unfolded in the doubles competition when Murray State's Stasya Sharapova and Anja Loncarevic came back from being down 4-3 to clinch the all-important doubles win by a final of 6-4.
Â
In singles play, the Racers got the job done with Claire Chang coming back from being a set down to win 7-5, 6-1 from the No. 1 singles spot. Amina Hadzic found herself down 5-2 in the third set, but clawed back and won from the No. 4 slot in a tiebreaker. MSU's Sara Loncarevic was also a winner from the No. 5 position 6-2, 6-1, and the clinching point came from her sister, Anja Loncarevic, at No. 2, in a straight-set win 7-6, 6-4.
Â
The win puts the Racers at 3-2 in the early spring season.
Â
"This was a great team win today," MSU head coach Jorge Caetano said. "Tennis wise, we have played better matches in the past, but this one for sure was one of our best performances from a mental standpoint because the girls were tuned in and responded very well when they had their backs against the wall. Doubles looked good and it gave us some confidence going into singles. St. Louis battled and pushed us on every match so it feels great to come back home with a solid road win."
Â
"Sara played another great match for us in giving a quick second point on the scoreboard. The other five players had tough battles and I am very pleased with the way they responded when facing adversity. Anja was superb mentally today because her opponent never gave up even when Anja had a comfortable lead and I am very happy with her performance from start to finish. Claire and Amina stayed with their opponents during the tough moments and had to dig very deep to get those wins, so I am proud of both of them."
Â
The Racers are back at their indoor home Sunday for a 1 p.m match against Illinois State at the Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Kentucky.
