For the fifth time in as many seasons, the Murray State rifle team will compete for a national championship. The Racers found out Tuesday that they will be one of eight team competing at the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships March 9-10 at the WVU Coliseum on the campus of West Virginia in Morgantown, West Virginia. MSU will enter the event seeking its third NCAA national title and first since 1987.
Wednesday's selection will mark the 33rd appearance by the Racers in the championship and they are currently tied with Alaska-Fairbanks for the second-most all-time. West Virginia leads the way with 36 all-time selections, to go along with a NCAA record 19 titles.
"The goal on top of the list at the beginning of the year is always to play on the last day of the season and we have accomplished that," said head coach Alan Lollar. "We now have to get ready to perform our best when our best is needed and expected. I'm proud of the team for once again putting themselves in position to challenge for a championship."
Joining Murray State in the field of eight teams this season will be defending champions Kentucky, top-seeded TCU and perennial power West Virginia. Others rounding out the eight-team field include Air Force, Navy, Alaska Fairbanks and Army West Point.
This will be the fourth consecutive NCAA championship appearance for two of the four seniors, MacKenzie Martin and Barbara Schläpfer. Martin and Schläpfer, along with fellow seniors Alathea Sellars and Eric Sloan, now have the distinction of being the fifth class in program history to win an OVC title in each of their four years of eligibility, joining the 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 teams.
