Wheeler Leads Final Round Charge In Arizona

The Murray State men's golf team finished the Loyola Intercollegiate in fine fashion as they shot their best round of the 54-hole event Monday with a 6-under-par 282 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.

The fourth-best round of the day among the 17 teams enabled MSU to move up four spots to finish in 12^th place on scores of 301-302-282=885.

Senior Gabe Wheeler moved from 44^th place to a finish of 17^th when he had a final round 68 and his final score line read 75-74-68=217, while
Austin Knight placed 33^rd, or 27 places better than after round two with a final score line of 75-75-70=220. Avery Edwards and Connor Coombs each carded even par 72 scores in the final round. Edwards placed 57^th on scores of 72-79-72=223, while Coombs finished in 83^rd place on rounds of 80-76-72=228. Justin Wendling was playing the event as an individual and placed 91^st on scores of 79-77-75=231.

UAB (final score 846) became the team champion by erasing a four-shot deficit in the final round to win after a score of 271. Elon placed second at 859 and UConn was third at 859.

Loyola's Evan Brown was the medalist on scores of 67-68-73=208.

Palm Valley GC played to a par of 72 and a length of 7,015 yards.

The Racers get back into action (March 17-19) at the Bobby Nichols Invitational in Sevierville, Tenn.
