The Murray State rifle team captured its 14th overall and fourth consecutive OVC championship Sunday at the Gamecock Rifle Range in Jacksonville, Alabama as part of the 2019 OVC Rifle Championship.
The Racers shot a 2352 in air rifle to finish the overall match with a 4685. Barbara Schläpfer shot a match-high 594 to lead MSU and end the match with an 1184 aggregate. MacKenzie Martin followed with a 588, while Alathea Sellars stayed close at 587. Eric Sloan added a 585 to the Racers' cause with Shelby Huber rounding out the scoring at 581."We want to congratulate JSU and Coach Frost on hosting a great championship weekend," said head coach Alan Lollar. "We had some shooters that needed to feel the championship environment and they rose to the occasion. Both Morehead State and JSU are very talented and dangerous opponents and I'm glad we were ready. Our entire team performed well and I think we learned some things that could help us in the near future. While this was a total team effort, I would like to say something about Eric Sloan. No one works harder and this weekend he came up big in a big match."
Following the championship, several Racers took home postseason honors from the OVC. Schläpfer took home the top honors Sunday afternoon, as she was named as both the Smallbore and Air Rifle Athlete of the Year. The awards marks the fifth straight year a Racers has won the top smallbore honors and the four consecutive years one has won the air rifle award.
In smallbore All-OVC honors, Schläpfer and Huber were named to the first team, while Sellars, Martin and Drewell were named to the second team. For air rifle, Schläpfer and Martin represented MSU on the first team, while Sellars was placed on the second team. Rounding out the awards for Murray State was Lollar, who was named as the OVC Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career and the fifth year running.
With the regular season and the conference championship behind it, Murray State now turns its attention to the annual NCAA qualifier Feb. 17 against Nebraska at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray.
