Game 1: Murray State 13, Saint Louis 12
Jensen Striegel and Madison Culver both came around to score in the opening frame to put up two quick runs for the Racers. In what would be the first of many runs in an extra-inning marathon, the score would stay 2-0 in favor of the Racers until the home half of the second when the Billikens would make a sizeable dent in the box score. Saint Louis would hit two home runs on their way to a nine run inning, making the score 9-2 after two complete. A three run shot from Kaylyn Breitbach would start the rally, while a two out, three run smash from Kristi Stevenson capped off a colossal inning for the Billikens.
Facing an uphill battle, the Racers would respond with three more runs of their own when Lexi Jones stepped to the plate with the bases full and laced a two RBI single to left field. Lindsey Carroll would also chip in an RBI single, scoring Sierra Gilmore and cutting the deficit to four runs as Saint Louis would hold a 9-5 advantage through the end of the Racer third.
Looking to close the gap a bit further, the Racers would manufacture another run in the fourth when an RBI double courtesy of Logan Braundmeier scored Jensen Striegel to make it 9-6.
Clinging to a three run lead in the home half of the fourth, Kaylea Chappelle would bring the Racer momentum to halt when she sent a ball sailing over the wall in center field for another Billiken two run home run.
The offensive dialogue would continue in the fifth, however, when Murray State answered with two more Racer runs. Lillie Goetz built on her outstanding weekend by driving in Brenna Finck and Lindsey Carroll with a single to right. Trimming the Billiken lead, 11-8 would be the new score line after the Racer fifth.
Back within three, the Racers would give one back in the bottom of the inning, trailing the Billikens 12-8 after five complete. Chasing four to begin the sixth, the Racers got three runs from one swing of the bat when a Lexi Jones three run rocket over the fence in left brought Murray State within a single run. Lindsey Carroll would follow the home run with a double to left center with nobody out in the inning, and Brenna Finck would go on to drive in Carroll, tying the score at 12 runs apiece and giving the Racers new life as they approached the seventh inning of action.
With both teams held scoreless in the seventh, the game would need extra innings to decide a winner. Logan Braundmeier would be placed on second to begin the eighth inning for the Racers and would advance to third when Sierra Gilmore put the ball in play to lead off the eighth. A fly ball from Lexi Jones would be deep enough to score Braundmeier from third, and the Racers captured a 13-12 lead after their half of the eighth.
With Ellison Barrett in the circle for the Racers, she would work a 1-2-3 inning to close the door on the Billikens in the bottom half and seal the victory for Murray State. 13-12 would be the final from Frost Stadium in Chattanooga.
In a game that featured 38 total hits between the two sides, Lexi Jones (2-4, 6 RBIs, HR) would spearhead an incredible offensive display for the Racers. Additionally, Lindsey Carroll, Logan Braundmeier, and Lillie Goetz would all collect three hits apiece in the win.
In the circle for the Racers, Ellison Barrett pitched four scoreless innings while striking out two to record her first win of the 2019 season.
Game 2: Kentucky 14, Murray State 4:
Taking on Kentucky in the second game, the sides would exchange a pair of runs in the opening inning to begin the contest. For the Wildcats, Kelsee Henson got her side on the board with a two RBI single to left center, scoring Abbey Cheek and Kayla Kowalik to take an early lead in the top of the first.
Producing two runs in response, the Racers would even the game at two runs apiece with a Logan Braundmeier single to center field that drove in Brenna Finck and Jensen Striegel to give Murray State a fresh start after the end of one complete.
The Wildcats would put up three more in the following inning thanks in part to a two RBI triple from Kowalik.
Now staring at a 5-2 deficit, the Racers would generate another run in the bottom of the fourth when Lindsey Carroll stepped to the plate and crushed a one out double to left center, scoring Sierra Gilmore to cut the Wildcat lead to 6-3 through the end of four complete.
Adding another run in their ensuing opportunity, the Wildcats would possess a 7-3 lead until Denise Teague drove in Sierra Gilmore by way of a sacrifice fly in the bottom of inning number six.
With the lead cut to three, Abbey Cheek would keep the Racers at a distance, leading off the seventh with a solo smash to right center to begin what would become a seven run inning for the Wildcats.
The Racers would be set down in order to end the game in the bottom of the seventh, falling to Kentucky with a final score of 14-4.
Brenna Finck, Lindsey Carroll, and Sierra Gilmore each collected two hits for the Racers, while doubles from Finck and Carroll accounted for both of Murray State's extra-base hits on the ballgame.
The Racers will return to the field on Wednesday as they go on the road to take on Southern Illinois in Carbondale. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
